I participated in the panel “Ciutats múltiples“, which brought together scholars interested in how the city is always made up of diverging assemblages. My presentation “Construyendo la ciudad con palabras y otras cosas ambivalentes: Las cadenas semiótico-materiales de un tranvía en Ecuador [Constructing the city with words and other ambivalent things: The material-semiotic chains of a tram in Ecuador]” reflected on the ways in which dominant discourses in Cuenca, including those of modernity, heritage, and sustainability, are intricately entangled with the material things the city is made with. The panel was organized by colleagues from the Friccions research team and benefited from discussion by Isaac Marrero Guillamón.
